Canada’s big 150th anniversary will be here and gone before we know it. So we asked ourselves how we could continue to bask in our Canadian pride long after this momentous celebration. And the answer was simple: bring it all back home! So what in the world is Canadiana style you ask?
Well it’s actually quite simple; the home must consist of (in no particular order):
Missing a few of the essentials? We’re happy to help here at Maker House.
If you lack a spare pair of snowshoes we’ve got a print that makes a great alternative. UNIK Printshop’s Walk with Me wood print brings to mind frozen footsteps in the forest. All of their prints are screen printed in Montreal onto a 1mm slice of wood and make for a striking showpiece.
Canadiana furniture must reflect the ruggedness of our landscape, and resilience of our people. At Maker House we have dozens of pieces made by our trusted local carpenters – we even do custom orders! Our Mechanicsville series includes a distressed pine dining table and bench set inspired by the working class history of our neighbourhood in Ottawa. Visit our shop to see some rustic pieces in person, or email firstname.lastname@example.org to ask us about custom measurements.
Looking for a Canada 150th keepsake? Springwater Woodcraft has created the perfect wooden box that can be handed down from generation to generation. Compliment this with our Canada 150 colouring book showing amazing northern scenes waiting to be coloured in with Haida-inspired coloured pencils by Native Northwest.
We’re not true Canadians without paying some homage to our ancestors and cultural traditions. Indigenous Postcards will look great on the fridge with our Totem Magnets, each designed by various First Nations artists, and made in BC by Native Northwest. Early trading is a part of our history, and our ‘Hudson Bay Heritage Edition’ print by ManMade Art features the iconic colours on the paddle as a symbol of Canadian exploration.
Did someone mention beer? This country has a long brewing tradition, and an exciting new generation of microbreweries - we have a great one across the street at Tooth & Nail, and three in our neighbourhood!. Maker House is proud to sell a wide selection of craft brewery glasses, along with coasters (even a Canada 150th special edition coaster set!) beer caddies and more great swag.
Et voilà! A quick guide to dialing up the Canadianness of your home. Take this well-crafted northern advice, show off your national pride, and you will be sure to impress visitors from here and afar.
Happy birthday Canada!
