“My rustic woodcraft is a manifestation of my love for the woods."

Dean Spence spent twenty two years building custom, hand-crafted log homes prior to turning his focus to rustic furniture design and production in 1994. Dean’s background studying at the B. Allen Mackie Log Building School in the 1970’s, earning Journeyman Carpenter certification in the 1980’s, and studying the work of numerous furniture builders in the 1990’s gives him a strong design foundation for both free-standing and built-in furnishing and fixtures. He has made many custom furniture pieces for designers and private clients.

Dean markets his rustic artistry under the name of Kapristo Mountain Woodcraft, producing distinctive, quality rustic furniture, house wares and twig miniatures from his workshop by the beautiful Mississippi River in Southeastern Ontario. His work features traditional joinery methods and birch bark mosaics, influenced by wood working traditions from geographic areas ranging from the Adirondacks of upstate New York, to the Canadian Rockies.

Dean has taught rustic furniture-building workshops in a dozen communities across North America. His natural bark accessories allow customers to take home a piece of (functional) nature and have become big sellers at Maker House!
