Two Heartwarming Fall Recipes 🍂

October 06, 2019
10/06/2019

Leaves are falling, the air is crisp, the apple picking posts are flooding our feeds, and the team at Maker House could not be more excited. If you noticed coffee shop signs advertising pumpkin spice, you knew it was officially fall... Right? But it’s not all pumpkin spice and rainbows. We get it -- seasonal transitions can suck, too. Sleep patterns shift, it gets dark before 7pm, flip flops rest at our front doors as a reminder of what once was…

Thankfully there are many ways to take advantage of the fall harvest besides pumpkin spice (though, we know it’s delicious!). Instead, we want to explore the flavours and wonders crafted by your fellow Canadian makers. Here is a quick guide to help you thrive and get the most out of this season -- yummy drink and soup recipe included.

Have you tried Toronto-based Sloane Fine Tea yet? This recipe will take your tea game up a notch, and it's a great one to try as a newbie! Here is a twist on how to make a classic London Fog at home using Sloane’s Heavenly Cream tea. All you’ll need is Heavenly Cream tea, a stovetop, a milk frother or blender, milk (we suggest non or low-fat milk), and liquid wildflower honey by Heritage Bee Co.

Fall also means delicious harvest vegetables that taste amazing boiled, roasted, or blended into soups. Your space might be a bit chilly so use the oven and warm your soul! We put together this amazing, creamy butternut squash soup recipe using Salt West’s Organic Roasted Garlic & Onion salt and Kinsip’s Whisky Barrel Aged Maple Syrup.

We suggest using fresh produce from the Parkdale Market (only a short walk away from our store). They are open until November with seasonal produce where you can find fresh, local squash, potatoes, carrots, sweet corn, and plenty of other fall foods. This soup is Maker House staff approved, so it is great for Thanksgiving! (Watch Jane’s cooking adventure on Maker House's Instagram stories!)

Speaking of Thanksgiving... if you will be happily gobbling turkey or mashed potatoes, we suggest you add Ottawa’s best cranberry sauce from Lowertown Canning: Chipotle Cranberry Sauce. It’s time to outshine your cousin.

Food and drinks aside, make sure to get outside, go apple or pumpkin picking, watch a Halloween movie, and take things easy. As always, you can visit us at Maker House, warm up while you try food samples and shop from over 180 Canadian makers. :-) Happy Fall!
