August: Monster Mayhem at Maker House

Have you met Melvin and Bob, our little monsters in the store? Sign up to join teacher Brenda Dunn on August 17th, bring the kids down to Maker House for some hands-on fun. Make your own cute little monsters; shape it, create a story, and let it guard your room, or house! Monster-Makers will need a parent-guardian to accompany them for the two hour workshop, and adults are encouraged to sign up as well! Sign up soon at this link, spots are limited.

Our featured Maker of the month goes to Grow Studios –and if you haven’t heard of them, you need to! Grow Studios operates as a social enterprise for individuals with exceptional needs.They have several businesses that produce pottery, art, print making, and woodworking - and have recently opened a new shared woodshop with Maker House! Read our latest Journal entry to see their commitment in challenging the stigma on mental health, how Maker House has teamed up with them, and where they hope to 'grow'. During the months of April, May and June we partnered with our friends at Tungasuvvingat Inuit (TI). TI serves as a one-stop resource for the complex and evolving needs of Inuit in Ontario; providing a culturally sensitive approach to social support, activities, counselling and crisis intervention. This Thursday we presented a cheque for $3,070 to TI. The funds raised through sales at Maker House will allow TI to run their Ikajutigiit Program, empowering young female future leaders, through artistic development and life skills workshops. This donation was made possible by our Maker-community and we are grateful for your continuous support.

Yes, that’s right. IT’S BACK. We’re proud to be hosting the fifth instalment of Ottawa’s beer educational series on August 18th at 6pm. This is your chance to ask the experts your burning questions about the beer industry. This month we will be featuring samples from Ashton Brewing Company and North of 7 Distillery while listening to heritage specialist, Stephen Jarrett, discuss brewing in the 1800’s. As always, the event will be free, but proceeds from any donations will go towards non-profits.

We love Canadian summers, and invite you to join us for free craft cocktail samples from Split Tree Cocktail Co. on August 25th between 5pm and 7pm at Maker House Co.
