Year in Review: Emerging Artists of 2016

December 05, 2016
12/05/2016

This past year has been amazing for us at Maker House Co.

We went from having only a handful of artists, to now having more than 120 artists from across Canada calling our store home.

We've been able to partner with acclaimed Canadian makers, as well as brand new artists, creating an eclectic collection of goods.

From home decor to art prints, 3-D crafts to hand-stitched maps, we are beyond proud of all of the amazingly unique work our makers produce.

Thus, before we move forward to 2017, we thought we should look back at the year that was and show our love for the emerging artists of 2016 at Maker House Co.

Here are 10 artists that made a huge impact in 2016:

Low Poly Crafts

Create your own 3-D paper sculptures with Ottawa's Low Poly Crafts. Ranging from $20 to $75, these kits are fun for all ages.

Sadie & June

This Ottawa couple burst onto the maker scene in 2016. Their hand-stitched heart maps are the perfect gift for any traveler, wanderer, or lover of their home-town.

STOUTHEART Shave Co.

Started by husband-and-wife duo, Greg and Jennifer Swaine, STOUTHEART is an all natural shaving and beard care products line based right here in Ottawa.

Woodsmoke & Olive

Using 100% natural soybeans for wax, Amanda, Markus, and their dog, Olive, are crafting an amazing collection of candles that match Canada's changing seasons.

Drop Drop Paint

Inspired by our neighbours Suzy Q - a dangerously delicious donut shop - Drip Drop Paint's prints are original watercolour paintings and look perfect in your kitchen or breakfast nook.

Maker Junior

Created by brothers Nanik and Hari Adnani, along with their mother Alison, Ottawa's Maker Junior's DIY kits help kids learn about technology through arts and crafts.

Winged Beast

Well-known for their satirical redrawn Canadian postcards, this Ottawa company branched into clothing in 2016 and we could not have been happier!

Studio Vcky

A fan of small animals and tiny hats, Studio Vcky is a Toronto company specializing in adorable cards. Their "Peace Out, Fuckers" print has been among the top sellers at Maker House Co. in 2016.

Broken Stick

Making bits of Canadiana out of old hockey sticks, vintage license plates, and barnwood, Ottawa's Broken Stick gives a second life to objects normally tossed to the curb.

Our Turn Woodcraft

Makers Shirley and David Stapley traveled to Ireland to learn from the masters of wood turning before returning to North Gower (just west of Ottawa) to perfect their trade.

Please feel free to browse Maker House Co. for all of their products and check out our Meet our Makers page to learn more about the artists that make our shop awesome.
